Why Refinish Your Hardwood Flooring?

Whether found in a historic Detroit home or a modern Downriver loft, hardwood is built to last for generations. However, daily life can result in scratches, gouges, moisture damage, and fading over time. Fortunately, hardwood refinishing is a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to replacing your flooring altogether. It can eliminate scratches and wear, allow you to change your stain, and add enhanced protection against wear and fading.

Hardwood Resurfacing vs. Hardwood Refinishing

You may have also heard of hardwood resurfacing (or recoating). Here’s how it differs from hardwood refinishing:

  • Hardwood resurfacing: If your hardwood is in decent shape but needs a little refresh, consider resurfacing instead. Resurfacing your hardwood is a quick and budget-friendly process that simply involves applying a fresh layer of protective finish. Resurfacing does not remove gouges or damage, nor does it change the original stain of your wood.
  • Hardwood refinishing: If your hardwood has noticeable damage, including scratches, fading, or deep dents, hardwood refinishing is the better option. This process involves sanding the wood down to eliminate the top coat, removing flaws while revealing the bare wood beneath. Refinishing also allows you to change the stain color of your hardwood. Hardwood refinishing requires specialized tools and skills, which makes it more involved (and expensive) when compared to hardwood resurfacing. However, it eliminates any visible damage, bringing your hardwood back to life—and it costs way less than replacing your hardwood.
